The Red Hill Valley
Why is the Red Hill Valley important?
Building the expressway has taught us many valuable lessons about the Red Hill Valley. Ecologically, it is a complex, interdependent network of life. The Red Hill Valley holds the largest of fourteen streams that once flowed through Hamilton north to Lake Ontario. The Valley provided for the first indigenous and Loyalists settlements in the region. As the city developed, it was one of the last green corridors for people to enjoy nature and recreation. Despite the expressway that now cuts through the heart of the Valley, there is still much to be enjoyed as the trail signs point out.
